Jean Prouvé Furniture
Architecture and furniture design seem to go hand in hand, every great architect has a side project of great furniture and Jean Prouvé is no exception.
We talked about his architecture work but Jean Prouvé completed his training as a metal artisan before opening his own workshop in Nancy in 1924.
Prouvé discovered electric welding and diverse production techniques that he applied to sheet steel, a material that enabled him to conceive "hollow sections". The use of this material was to be found in most of the furnishings he designed. From the 1930s onwards, Prouvé immediately asserted the peculiarity of his approach: the mass-producing of furniture on industrial machinery.
The shortage of metals in World War Two forced him to switch to wood which we think only made his work better.
In the following years he created numerous furniture designs, and in 1947 Prouvé established his own factory.
We love creators that work in a diverse range of projects and Prouvé was definitely one of them. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
